TENDRIL

Tampa, Florida, US

Tendril is a striking permanent public art installation by Daniel Canogar at Tampa International Airport, Florida. Occupying the Airside F terminal ceiling, this large-scale sculpture consists of ribbon‑like LED screens that coil around the existing truss system.

Through generative algorithmic programming, Tendril displays real‑time animations of native South Florida vines. The imagery evolves gradually—from fast-moving invasive growth to calm sequences of plant settlement—blurring the boundary between built infrastructure and natural systems.

Completed in 2017 as part of a major terminal expansion, the installation connects indoor and outdoor environments, inviting travellers to reflect on nature’s reclamation within a modern airport setting. The piece functions like a living garden: new plant motifs can be added over time, enabling ongoing renewal and interaction.

Daniel Canogar (b.1964, Madrid), a pioneer in LED‑based media sculpture, uses this work to explore themes of memory, growth, and technological response to natural environments.
