Shimmer (2024) is a permanent, generative LED installation by Daniel Canogar, gracefully suspended in the atrium of GEMÜ’s headquarters in Kupferzell, Germany. This sculptural work channels the essence of six German rivers—the Rhine, Elbe, Danube, Ems, Weser and Oder—through real-time data such as water flow, pH, oxygen and temperature.
The flowing LED ribbons respond to fluctuations in these environmental variables, shifting colour palettes, animation speed and rhythm. The imagery forms a mesmerising digital cascade—an evocative metaphor for the convergence of industrial technology and natural ecosystems. The piece stresses the role of data as a vital lifeline, prompting viewers to reconsider humanity’s relationship with freshwater resources.
Crafted from flexible LED screens, custom generative software, a computing system and a minimal metal support, Shimmer demonstrates how digital media can foster ecological awareness through poetic abstraction and sculptural presence.
